Abstract

1354448 Protective guards embodying sun visors GENERAL MOTORS CORP 2 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 50538/72 Headings B7B and B7J A protective guard for vehicle occupants comprises a sliding element 22 which serves as a sun visor when partially extended from a position generally parallel to the roof 10. The element is extended to a position below the bottom edge of the windscreen 12 due to its inertia upon high vehicle deceleration. The element 22 slides between roof frame 11 and roof lining 19 of foam material by thickened edges (23), Fig. 2 (not shown) engaging rails (24), spring steel inlays being embedded in the thickenings. The element 22 consists of cut and tear proof transparent flexible material, e.g. polycarbonate, part of its frontal area being coloured or opaquely masked to serve as the sun visor. Alternatively, the sun visor may be of energy absorbing material. Friction devices, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown) prevent inadvertent extension of the element 22.
