Abstract
1351141 Apparatus for forming a tray, or carton, around packaging articles P E ELFORD 7 May 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 6143/70 Heading B8C Apparatus, for forming a tray or carton for the reception of similarly-shaped articles 55, e.g. cans, jars, etc., and from a precut, substantially rectangular, blank 50 of cardboard, paperboard, paper, plastics material, or metal the articles being collated on the blank prior to the formation of a tray, comprises a platform 10, four carton wall raising-plates 17-20 pivotally mounted respectively at 21-24 within corresponding recesses 13-16 in the platform, and means for operating the plates so that they pivot from initial positions substantially flush with the platform 10 to positions perpendicular to the platform to erect the wallforming portions 51, 52 of the blank 50. As shown, in their initial positions the plates 18, 20 are flush with the platform 10 while the plates 17, 19 are downwardly inclined from their pivotal axes 21, 23 so that the upper surfaces of spring-loaded rollers 27, 27, carried adjacent their outer ends on brackets 26, 26, are flush with the platform 10. In operating the machine a blank, Fig. 4, is placed on the platform 10 and the required number of articles 55 are collated on the blank whereupon a treadle 40 is depressed to pivotally raise the plates 17-20. The plates 18, 20 engage the wall-forming portions 52, 52 of the blank at the same time as the rollers 27, 27 engage the corner forming portions 53, 54 to cause them first to be folded upon one another and then to be folded against the wall portions 52, 52, the plates 17, 19 subsequently engaging the wall forming portions 51, 51. The corner portions 53, 54 are glued to the respective wall-forming portions 52, 52. The treadle 40 is connected by a spindle 39 and brackets 38, 38, to a plate 34 which is vertically guided by spindles 35 engaging in apertures in lugs 36 and which is connected to the plates 17-20 by respective links 28-33. In an alternative blank, Fig. 5, not shown, cuts (63) at the corner forming portions provide tabs (64) on the longer wall forming portions (61) which tabs are bent round the shorter wall forming portions (62) and glued thereto. The plates 17, 19 could be arranged with their pivotal axes below the platform 10 to lie, in their initial position parallel to the platform. The loading of the blank could be effected automatically by a conveyer and the plates 17-20 could be pneumatically operated.
