Abstract

989,861. Packaging - machines ; cartons. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Sept. 18, 1962 [Dec. 12, 1961], No. 35544/62. Headings B8C and B8P. Bottles are packaged by applying by hand, at a position A, a carton formed from a blank, Fig. 13, the bottles being moved to a position C where the carton is folded and its ends interlocked by hand- or treadle-operated mechanism. The bottles are supplied on a pair of endless conveyers 21, 23 to support strips 24 between guide rails 22. After the carton is placed on the bottles, they are pushed manually between blades 30 having folding surfaces 31. A shaft 57, Fig. 7, is rotated by the operator to actuate folding members by intermediate cams and linkage; a folding flange 50 on a member 48<SP>1</SP> carried by a pair of supports 46, is wider than the corresponding flange 52, and therefore folds up the flap 97 in advance of the flap 96. A further cam on the shaft 57 then causes fingers 72 to rise and tuck locking tabs 101 into openings 98 on the carton. The package so formed is discharged via a pivoted ramp 36 on to a table 32.
