Abstract
1349436 Smoothing cable sheaths INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 26 July 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 34895/72 Heading B5A In the manufacture of a cable sheathed with rubber or plastics to which is applied an armour of a concentric neutral conductor, extending generally longitudinally and sinusoidally and which is caused to penetrate the sheath by drawing through a die, the diameter of the sheath prior to application of the armouring is adjusted by passage through the adjustable diameter bore of a resilient annular sizing member 11, e.g. of hardened and rectified steel. The adjustability of the bore is permitted by a slit 15 extending through the member 11 at 45 degrees to the bore axis, and is effected by camming means acting radially inwardly upon the member 11, via thrust means which may comprise pawls, cylinders, springs, or as in the described embodiment, balls 16 which are radially displaced by the axially displaceable frusto-conical camming surface 17 of a member 31. The surface 17 may alternatively by cylindrical, with the outer surface of member 11 being frustoconical, or both these surfaces may be cylindrical with the camming surface provided by the thrust means. In the described embodiment, the sizing is effected by the leading edge 14 of the member 11, opposed faces 34, 34<SP>1</SP> of which, Fig. 2, are located in abutment with surfaces 20, 19 respectively of a member 26, Fig. 1, and a member 23 located therewithin. The camming surface 17 is provided on a ring nut 31, in threaded engagement 27 with member 26 for axial displacement of the surface 17 upon rotation from knobs, e.g. 33. The nut 31 is locked by a screw 35 engaging therebetween and a piece 3111 thereof partially separated therefrom by a notch 36. The adjustment of the member 11 is indicated between a notch 28 and a scale, respectively on the upstream faces of the nut 31 and member 26.
