Abstract
1345895 Keyboards RCA CORPORATION 7 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 13639/71 Heading B6F [Also in Divisions H2 and H4] A keyboard transducer comprises a piezoelectric element 4 into which a plurality of electrodes 10 are embedded, at each of which a signal is produced when the element is struck. As shown in Fig. 4, the electrodes extend longitudinally of the element and the striking mechanism comprises a striker 24 carried by a return leaf spring 18 and retained by a pivoted latch 30 until the latch is released by pressure on a key 28 which at the same time compresses a loading spring 26 for the striker. Alternatively the electrodes may extend transversely of the element at different levels as shown in Fig. 3b, wherein an array of elements 4 has sets of electrodes 10a ... 10c and 10d ... 10f extending perpendicular to each other, each electrode extending through several elements. Such an array may be fabricated as a single laminated structure, Figs. 4a, 4b (not shown). Fig. 6, shows how a plurality of transducers in a keyboard, each with five electrodes such as 10a, may be connected so that each produces a different set of signals according to a five-bit code. Each electrode represented by a black circle is connected to one of five output lines 2 ... 2<SP>4</SP> and represents a binary 1 and each electrode represented by a clear circle is unconnected and represents a binary 0.
