Abstract

1342069 Etching THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Dec 1970 59567/70 Heading B6J [Also in Divisions H1 and H5] In a method of making an electrically conductive component for an electrical device, e.g. filaments for incandescent lamps, discharge tubes, thermionic valves or heaters, a part of a rectangular cross-sectional metal foil sheet or ribbon, having etch resistant material on both faces thereof disposed in a pattern corresponding to the required component, is etched away chemically or electrocnemically, the etch resistant material is removed and the component is bent into a more compact form than its original form. The metal may be tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten or a nickel-chrome or nickel-iron alloy, chemically etched in an aqueous solution of potassium ferricyanide and sodium hydroxide at 70‹ C. The foil is initially degreased, photoresist applied and then exposed by ultra-violet rich light through twin photographically produced masks, one on each face, representing the required filament shape. The photoresist is then developed, the foil etched and the photoresist scrubbed off to leave the rectangular cross-sectional filament which is then bent into a compact element. A mask other than photoresist may be used. A preliminary etch may be used to determine crystal structure for producing filaments with a particular crystal structure.
