Abstract

1,185,873. Two part couplings. BRITISH LIGHTING INDUSTRIES .Ltd. 3 Jan., 1968 [6 Feb., 1967], No. 5626/67. Heading H2E. [Also in Division H1] A lamp 1, such as a high pressure mercury vapour lamp or a tungsten halogen lamp, comprises a linear tube 3 of high-temperature glass, e.g. fused silica (quartz) having at each end a pinch seal 4 in which is embedded an electrically conducting foil 5 of molybdenum or molybdenum alloy with a tungsten electrode 6 and a stiff conducting external lead 7 welded to each foil, the lead 7 being of platinum clad molybdenum or molybdenum alloy. The lamp may be supported in a holder 2 on opposite contact plungers 8 suitably shaped to engage the leads 7, which may be formed as loops or rods or other configurations. An alternative holder contact (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) comprises two parallel spring blades (9 and 10), one above the other, the lower blade (10) having a projection (11) on its upper face. Loop 7 is inserted between the blades (9, 10) and passes round the projection (11). The leads 7 constitute heat sinks for the foils 5. The lamp 1 may be mounted in a holder (2, Fig. 1, not shown) having a parabolic reflecting surface.
