Abstract

1337489 Tobacco substitute PHILIP MORRIS Inc 28 July 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 35507/71 Heading A2C [Also in Division D2] A tobacco substitute is produced from sugar beet pulp resulting from the extraction of sugar from sugar beet by (I) treating an aqueous slurry of the pulp with a pectin release agent e.g. HCI, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , citric or maleic acid, or (NH 4 ) 2 H.PO 4 , so that protopectins in the pulp are hydrolysed to pectins (2) if desired comminuting the beet pulp produced and saponifying the pectins released with an oxide, hydroxide or alkaline reacting salt of a monovalent cation e.g. alkali metal or ammonium hydroxides (3) treating the product of step (1) or (2) with an oxide, hydroxide or alkaline reacting salt of a multivalent metal e.g. calcium or magnesium oxide, calcium phosphate or calcium or magnesium hydroxide to gel the pectins and (4) casting the slurry on to a metal or glass sheet and drying. The dried product may be cut for use as a cigarette filler. The slurry may have added thereto at step (3) nicotine, citric maleic or inorganic acids to adjust p.H, sugar, plasticizers e.g. triethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or glycerine flavors and colorants. Step (1) is carried out at p.H 1-6 and 40‹C-110‹C and step (3) at p.H 5-9 and 0‹C-100‹C.
