A product for smoking in the form of a cigarette, cigar or cigarillo which contains no tobacco plant parts, comprises a mixture of from 5 to 95 per cent by weight of a film forming ingredient which is an acid gum having an acid value exceeding 30 mg. of potassium hydroxide per gram of gum, and from 5 to 90 per cent by weight of a mineral ingredient, the balance, if any, consisting of compatible ingredients. The mixture is cast into sheets for subsequent processing, e.g. by shredding to form a cigarette filler. Suitable acid gums include acidic pectins and pectates extracted from tobacco, pectin from citrus fruits alginic acid, polyuronic acids, salts of these acids, synthetic esters of alginic acid, and esters of pectic acids. Preferably the pectinic material is that which is derived from tobacco plant parts after destroying the alkaline earth metal cross-links of the pectins by the known methods of (a) precipitating the alkaline earth as an essentially insoluble compound, (b) sequestering the alkaline earth, or (c) treatment with an acid to form soluble alkaline earth salts and release the insoluble free pectic acid. The mineral ingredient may be a calcium, sodium, potassium or magnesium salt, or a clay. Preferably water-insoluble minerals such as calcium and/or magnesium orthophosphates, pyro phosphates and polyphosphates are used. Precipitated tricalcium phosphate is especially preferred. Optional further ingredients, long lists of some of which are given, include nicotine-donating ingredients or nicotine per se plasticizers, sugars, flavours, and colouring.
