Abstract

1326539 Striker mechanisms SCHERMULY Ltd 21 Dec 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 62276/69 Heading F3A A percussion striker mechanism for firing flares, distress signals, rockets and mortars, comprises a casing 1 having a recess 3 for receiving a percussion cap or a flare fitted with a percussion cap, a slidable striker 5 with a relatively movable catch 18, a spring 13 acting on the striker, a cam surface 19, and a priming sleeve 7 with a knob 9. The cam surface is formed at one end of a sleeve which extends from a closure plug 4 for the casing. The plug also carries a rod 15 for stabilizing the spring 13. A sleeve 8 for preventing the ingress of grit surrounds the priming sleeve 7 and is acted on by a spring 12. To use the mechanism, the knob is moved in the direction of arrow A so as to retract the sleeves 7 and 8 and the striker 5 and to compress the springs 12 and 13. In the fully primed position, the cam surface 19 urges the catch 18 entirely into a recess, 17, whereupon the striker is released from the priming sleeve 7 and is driven against the percussion cap by the spring 13. A spring 20 prevents bounce of the striker and also raises the striker to a position in which the catch 18 can re-engage the edge of the priming sleeve once the two sleeves 7 and 8 have been allowed to return to their initial position under the action of spring 12. The spring 13 may be omitted, and the spring 20 employed as a tension spring for biasing the striker.
