Abstract

1323867 Nibblers W A WHITNEY CORP 7 Sept 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 41706/71 Heading B3W The leading end of a nibbling punch comprises an annular wall 34 which bites into a workpiece to prevent lateral displacement of the punch relative to the die during a punching stroke. The depth of the recess 35 surrounded by the wall is less than the thickness of a workpiece on which the nibbler is to be used. Automatic means for indexing the workpiece may be provided. To facilitate manual indexing of the workpiece, a pilot punch 50, Fig. 9, is screwed into a threaded bore in the punch body. On the first punching stroke, the pilot punch punches a hole just before the punch proper forms a larger one. The workplace is moved between punching strokes until the pilot punch abuts the leading edge 20a of the slot 20 being punched and a crescent-shaped strip 47 is punched out at each stroke.
