633,797. Making dies. AKTIEBOLAGET ELEKTROLUX. Oct. 10, 1947, No. 27261. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Punching ; broaching.-A punching die is made by embossing a first pad with a punch, using the pad as a die in co-operation with the punch to punch an auxiliary die ; and using the auxiliary die in co-operation with the punch to form a final die for use with the punch in a press. The auxiliary die is used to build up a laminated die which is used for the final punching. The auxiliary die 15 is a steel strip punched by using a resin-bonded fabric pad 13 embossed by the punches 10 as a die. The die 15 is used to punch a succession of strips which are assembled by riveting or welding to form a single die 17. The strips may be punched by using the preceding punched strip as a die, the strip 15 being partly filled with aluminium or brass punchings which support the laminµ-punchings holding the laminae in alignment. The die 17 is mounted on a faced block 19 and is used to punch the final steel die 18. The punch ends are upset, used to broach the die 18 and when re-ground co-operated with the hardened and ground die 18. In a modification small holes are drilled in the pad 13 within the punch outlines to produce a sharp embossing. In a further modification the final die is severed into separate dies.
