Abstract
1320790 Making race rings TIMKEN CO 17 Nov 1971 [23 Nov 1970] 55670/70 Heading B3A In a method of making a bearing ring, e.g. a tapered roller cone, a ring 1 of rectangular section formed by hot rolling is subjected to cold forming by impact whereby to produce a ring form 2 of non-rectangular section having substantially the shape of the required bearing ring. The cold forming operation utilises an extrusion die 3 with a knock-out sleeve 4. The ring form 2 is afterwards machined on the surface providing the race, and on the narrower end to the required axial length. Prior to cold forming, the ring may be hot sized and the surfaces 5, 6 may be machined.
