Abstract

417,774. Making bearings. SKERRETT, H. N., 24, Temple Row, Birmingham.-(Timken Roller Bearing Co. ; Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.) April 30, 1934, No. 12932. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Working at specified temperatures.-Annular raceway members for roller bearings are formed by bending one or more flat strips into a ring and welding the ends together, heating the ring to a temperature high enough to refine the structure of the weld but insufficient to cause scaling, planing off the flash at the weld while the ring is still heated and then die-forming the heated ring into a raceway member. The strip used is flat sectioned and either a single strip or two or more arcuate strips may be used to form the ring. The single strip may be wound into a helix and then be cut to form a series of one-piece rings. After welding, the ring is heated to between 1000‹ F. and 1450‹ F. to refine the weld and then the flash planed off the heated ring, first in a direction axial of the ring and then in plane thereof. The ring is again heated to about 1450‹ F. and inserted in a coining die to be converted into a raceway. Specification 412,868 is referred to.
