Abstract
1316195 Upgrading ilmenite BRITISH TITAN Ltd 8 Dec 1971 [2 April 1971] 8580/71 Headings C1A and C1N Comminuted massive ilmenite having a mean wt. particle size of less than 355 Á is leached with aqueous 5-12% HCl, separated, leached again with aqueous 15-25% HCl until the TiO 2 content is 70-80% by wt. when dried to constant wt. at 105 C., separated, and washed with dilute aqueous H 2 SO 4 . Both leaching steps are effected at elevated temperature, preferably above 100 C., e.g. at 105 C. and 110 C. for the first and second stages respectively. Alternatively, if the ilmenite is comminuted to below 44 Á, the temperatures may be 85-100 C. and 95-100 C. respectively. The HCl from the second stage may be used in the first stage of a subsequent leach. The product may be dried at 105 C. and ignited at 800 C. It may be digested with conc. H 2 SO 4 and dissolved in water or dilute H 2 SO 4 to form a Ti sulphate solution which may be hydrolysed to give hydrous TiO 2 .
