Abstract
Titanium is manufactured by the reduction of excess titanium tetrachloride with metallic sodium so that about 2 per cent of lower valency chlorides of titanium are present in the product. The product mixture is ground to particles of less than 3/8 inches in size and leached with 0.5 to 2 per cent aqueous acid, such as hydrochloric acid, the leaching step being carried out within 15 minutes and preferably within 5 minutes. Having removed the bulk of the acidified brine from the titanium metal by decantation, a second leaching may be carried out using the same acid at the same concentration as in the first leaching within a period of less than 5 minutes. The metal powder is then filtered and dried at 60 DEG C. and in one example quoted, the titanium produced, after arc melting, had a hardness of 140 D.P.N. and a hydrogen content of 0.003 per cent. Specification 726,367 and 738,149 are referred to.
