Abstract
1312765 Upgrading ilmenite BRITISH TITAN Ltd 15 Oct 1971 [12 March 1971] 6750/71 Addition to 1282508 Headings C1A and C1N A TiO 2 concentrate is obtained by heating comminuted massive ilmenite at 700-800‹ C. to oxidize the iron content to Fe<SP>3+</SP>, heating at 650-800‹ C. to reduce the iron content to Fe<SP>2+</SP>, leaching with 10-30% H 2 SO 4 until the TiO 2 content of the dry solid is 70-80% by wt., and heating at 100-800‹ C. Both initial heating steps may be carried out in a fluidized bed or rotary kiln. The reducing agent may be H 2 (Œ steam), CO, or CH 4 , e.g. natural gas. The initial material may have an average particle size below 355 Á and may be milled before leaching until 85-90% of the particles are below 44 Á. Leaching may be effected in at least 2 stages at above 100‹ C., preferably at b.pt., using waste sulphate process acid, optionally in the presence of a cationic surfactant. The leached product may be washed and dried at above 100‹ C., e.g. 200‹ C. It may then be digested in conc. H 2 SO 4 and dissolved to form a titanyl sulphate solution, an organic flocculating agent added and the solids removed, and the solution hydrolysed to give TiO 2 .
