Abstract
1316124 Moulding battery grids JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 2 Oct 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 50181/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] A grid for supporting the active material of a battery electrode is made by spraying finelydivided graphite on to a graphite mould having an impression of the grid. The graphite is in the form of an aqueous dispersion and the mould is heated to evaporate the water and leave a continuous graphite film on the upper surface of the mould. An electrode lug of lead is placed in the mould in contact with the graphite film and the remaining space in the mould is filled with particles of PVC. The mould is heated in an oven at a temperature of 240‹ C. to sinter the PVC particles to form a solid but flexible grid with the lug embedded therein. After cooling, the grid is removed from the mould, the grid having a continuous conducting film on its surface which was in contact with the mould. The grid is subsequently pasted with active material. In alternative arrangements, the graphite film is replaced by silver, zinc or tin.
