Abstract

1310814 Printing apparatus ADOLPH GOTTSCHO Inc 9 April 1970 [9 April 1969] 16964/70 Heading B6C A web 20 which is to be divided into segments by a rotating segmenting wheel 26 is printed on by a rotary printing cylinder 36 driven synchronously with the segmenting wheel 26. The printing cylinder 36 and the segmenting wheel 26 are connected by an override clutch and the printing cylinder 36 may be rotated by an auxiliary drive when the segmenting wheel 26 is stopped the connection between the printing cylinder 36 and segmenting wheel 26 being restored only when the two are aligned in registration. Preferably the printing cylinder 36 is an intaglio cylinder, and is held in split bearings so that it can easily be removed and replaced by a cylinder of a different diameter. When the printing cylinder 36 is changed the impression cylinder 38 is moved to an appropriate spacing by threaded bolts 90 and an ink well 40 is displaced along inclined guides 144 to accommodate the new cylinder. Replaceable gears in the drive train to the cylinder 36 make it possible to give a new cylinder 36 a peripheral speed which matches that of the segmenting wheel 26.
