Abstract
1309733 Continuous winding of filamentary material onto flanged spools DAVY PLASTICS MACHINERY Ltd 2 June 1970 [3 June 1969] 28034/69 Heading D1J In the continuous winding apparatus shown, in Fig. 2, when the left-hand spool is full the empty right-hand spool is accelerated until the peripheral velocity of the barrel of the empty spool is equal to the linear speed of the wire 30 being wound. The guide roller 23 is then displaced by the screw means 24' to a setting such that the wire 30 from the full spool contacts the barrel of the empty spool as shown. According to the invention deflectors 27, carried by a post 26, then move to a setting pushing the wire onto a snagging hook carried by an annular chamber rotating with the full spool and so cause one or more turns of the wire to be wound in said chamber. The wire deflector 27 is then moved to a setting pushing the wire onto a snagging hook carried by an annular chamber rotating with the empty spool and so cause the wire to enter said chamber. The wire extending between the two chambers is severed by fixed knives (35), Fig. 1 (not shown). Further rotation of the empty spool causes the wire 30 to be wound onto the empty spool. By transferring the wire into the annular chamber associated with the full spool before the wire is severed, the tail end of the wire is retained in the annular chamber by centrifugal force. Fig. 3 shows a cross-section through one of the aforesaid chambers. The upper and rear wall of the chamber 10 are provided by an annular plate 13. Friction pads 14 are so positioned that the plate 13 normally rotates with the mandrel 2 on which the take up spool is mounted. A peripheral brake 17 can be actuated to act on the plate 13 and reduce its speed relatively to that of the mandrel 2. In order to increase the length of the wire contained in the chamber of the right-hand spool the brake 17 is actuated as soon as a few turns have been wound onto the empty spool. This causes the snagging hook carried by the plate 13 to slow down relatively to the spool and so cause wire to be wound off the barrel of the right-hand spool and into the chamber 10 where it is retained by centrifugal force. The brake 17 is then released and the plate 13 accelerates to the speed of the spool. When the right-hand spool is full, an empty spool on the left-hand spool is brought up to speed and the guide roller 23 is moved to a setting such that the wire 30 is tangential to the barrel of the empty barrel. The wire is then transferred to the left-hand spool in the manner described with respect to the righthand spool. The annular chambers 10 prevent the severed ends of the wire from lashing and damaging the machine whilst a spool is being brought to a standstill.
