Abstract

1307942 Tubes J R HANRAHAN JNR 20 March 1970 [1 April 1969 5 March 1970] 13726/70 Heading F2P [Also in Division A5] A tube for use in the production of an orthopaedic cast comprises a layer of stretchable tubular air-permeable fabric and a tubular barrier layer of a flexible, inert, liquid-impermeable plastics material attached to said fabric layer in such a manner that the plastics material does not materially reduce the stretchability of the fabric. To form a cast, such a tube, with the barrier layer outermost and with an outer layer of stretchable, tubular, air-permeable fabric completely covering the barrier layer, may be applied to an injured member, an initiallyfluent layer of rigid-resin-forming composition then being applied to the outer fabric layer and the composition cured to form a rigid resinous layer at the outer surface of the outer fabric layer. Such a three-layer tube may be formed by spot-adhering an aluminized plastics layer 45 on to part of a length 11 of fabric material sleeve using a heated roller 41 pressed against a rotated mandrel 40, the barrier layer assuming a corrugated form on removal of the fabric sleeve 11 from mandrel 40, the free part 47 of the sleeve 11 then being folded back over the barrier layer to form the outer fabric layer. The barrier layer may be attached to one or both fabric layers by heat activatable adhesives or by heat-bonding. Windows may be provided in the cast. The cast may be rendered weightbearing by applying fibreglass tape over the tacky resin, and by applying more resin over the tape after setting of the initial resin layer. The fabric layers may be made of knitted cotton, acrylic fibres, crimped filaments and yarns or a Terry fabric. The barrier layer may be a synthetic rubber, or polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate polyester. The resin may be a polyurethane, water-reducible polyester, or a phenoxy resin, for example.
