The brush 4 is mounted on the end of a rod 6 with the interposition of a resilient washer 5, the rod 6 passing through an aperture in an upper projection 7 of the brush holder which also acts as a stop for the brush spring 8. An insulating sleeve 10 surrounding the brush holder 1 screws into the current supply bar 11 to press a shoulder 3 of the brush holder against a corresponding shoulder of the bar 11 by means of a resilient annular member 12. The insulating brush raising member 13, which is of square cross-section, is freely received within a generally square bore formed by the end of the sleeve 10 and is slidable on the rod 6, normally being urged against the projection 7 by a spring 14 which is weaker than the spring 8. To raise the brush, the member 13 is lifted out of the end of sleeve 10, and then rotated so that, under the force of spring 8, it will abut against the end of the sleeve. This action lifts the brush 4 away from the surface 9, so that the whole assembly may now be unscrewed from bar 11. Abutment of a block 15 on the end of the rod 6 against the bottom of member 13 prevents the brush being worn away too far, the block 15 also providing, by its position at any time, an indication of brush wear.
