Abstract

1298725 Cooling pistons CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 20 March 1970 13508/70 Heading F2T A piston has an annular oil cooling groove 20 formed in its head 10, which groove opens into the interior of the head and is disposed between the piston crown 11 and the top compression ring groove 12. A boss 14 extends from the underside of the crown 11 and forms therewith a chamber 15 closed by a plug 16 and containing a coolant, such as a mercury-sodium mixture. The opposing surfaces 17 and 18 of the head and boss respectively form a tapering chamber through which, in use, cooling oil, as indicated by the arrows 19, is supplied to the groove 20 which is inclined to the piston working surface 21 at an angle a of between fifteen and forty-five degrees. The boss 14 and skirt 13 are secured to the head 11 by welding.
