1296169 Packaging bottles FEDERAL PAPER BOARD CO Inc 28 July 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 35375/71 Heading B8C In a packaging machine, a bottle carrier 10 having bottom flaps 17, 17<SP>1</SP> disposed in the open position is fed on a downwardly sloping conveyer 32 to an assembly station 30 where it is pulled over a group of bottles 11 carried by a continuously driven conveyer 21, the flaps 17, 17<SP>1</SP> then being closed by plows 50, 50<SP>1</SP> and secured in position. The carrier has a handle section 14 and transverse partitions 15, 15<SP>1</SP> and 16, 16<SP>1</SP> and is set up from a flat blank by a mechanism, not shown. During transfer on the conveyer 32 the flaps 17, 17<SP>1</SP> are folded outwardly and upwardly by folding bars 34, 34<SP>1</SP> so that, at the assembly station 30, elongate plates 42, 42<SP>1</SP> carried by opposed pairs of vertically disposed conveyer chains 43, 43<SP>1</SP> engage in the angles between the flaps and the carrier to push the carrier downwards over the bottles 11. The conveyer 21 feeds the bottles between opposed belts 23, 23<SP>1</SP> carrying bottle engaging members which align the bottles in transverse pairs. The flaps may be secured in the closed position by a heat adhesive activated by hot-air from a nozzle adjacent the plows 50, 501. Alternatively, the flaps may be formed with tongue and slot closure members which are interengaged by a pin wheel or plow adjacent the plows 50, 50<SP>1</SP>.
