Abstract
1294821 I C engine valve gear TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 May 1971 [25 May 1970] 12945/71 Heading F1B The exhaust valve of a four-stroke I C engine is re-opened during the induction stroke to recycle source of the exhaust gas, in order to reduce nitrogen oxide pollutants and unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas emitted. The exhaust valve cam has a main lobe 34 and an additional lobe 38 which re-opens the exhaust valve while the piston is at about the middle of the length of the induction stroke. The lift of the valve is about 12% of the lift due to the main lobe 34. In an example, the nitrogen oxides are reduced to 1000 ppm and the unburned hydrocarbons to 130 ppm. At high load operation the amount of gas re-cycled is reduced due to the higher cylinder pressure compared to the exhaust passage pressure. At idling speed, the amount of gas re-cycled can be reduced by employing an hydraulic valve lifter and adjusting the breakdown rate so that the additional actuation of the valve is cancelled.
