1290660 Compacting metal particles TELEDYNE INDUSTRIES Inc 22 July 1970 35421/70 Heading B5A An apparatus for compacting metal particles, e.g. zirconium, columbium, hafnium, or titanium chips, comprises a hollow tube 12 with top and bottom closures 18 and 14, respectively, formed of a ductile material, e.g. black iron, stainless steel cloth, rubber belting, or zirconium foil, a buffer material 22, 24, 26, e.g. cardboard, surrounding the tube 12 and closures 14, 18, and a flexible enclosure 36, 40, e.g. of rubber or plastics. In use, the apparatus with the particles 10 is evacuated before being placed in liquid chamber and subjected to pressure, e.g. 25,000 p.s.i. A buffer sheet 28 of rubber-coated fabric can be placed around the cardboard 22, with end caps 30, 32, and spacer strips 34, 38 allow the tube 12 to be evacuated.
