Abstract

128,661. Duffie, J. J. Aug. 28, 1917. Sounds, controlling and actuating apparatus by.-Consists in tiring submarine mines on the approach of a submarine vessel by means of a thermomicrophonic apparatus set in action by the sound from the propeller of the submarine vessel. As shown, the apparatus comprises a microphonic diaphragm 33, Fig. 3, connected to a magnifying lever 36, which, in vibrating, touches alternately the flanges 37 of a contact piece 38. The intermittent current thus produced in a coil 29, Fig. 5, heats a mercurial thermometer 17, the mercury of which rises to an adjustable contact 24, thereby completing the circuit of a solenoid 4, Fig. 1. The solenoid then drives a firing-pin 5 against a cap 6 to fire the mine. This apparatus is arranged in a compartment 7 at the top of a mine, the microphonic receiver being screwed into a socket 2.
