Abstract

5492. Ladbrook, A. H. April 12. Projectiles. - Consists in providing the noses of projectiles with an electric sparking-device set in action by the pressure of the air during the flight of the projectile, for igniting balloon gases. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a battery C is connected by leads E to the primary of a sparking-coil F, the secondary of which is connected to the body of the projectile and to an insulated piston forming a spark-gap at T. The primary circuit is normally open, and the piston S is pressed forwards by a spring S<1>. During flight, air pressure on the piston pushes it back and closes the primary circuit between contacts L, L<1> by an insulated bridge N. When the projectile strikes a balloon, the balloon gases enter the projectile at U and leave at M and become ignited by the sparks at T. In a modification, the sparks are produced by a dynamo driven by a vane-wheel during the flight of the projectile.
