Abstract

1280923 Lubricating oils ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 21 May 1970 [5 Sept 1969] 24752/70 Heading C5E Mineral lubricating oils are produced by: (a) hydrocracking a feedstock, having a viscosity index of 50-80 and of which at least 90 wt. per cent boils above 600‹ F., by contacting with hydrogen at 725-875‹ F. in the presence of a catalyst comprising an active alumina support carrying (i) Ni, (ii)W and/or Mo and (iii) boria; and (b) hydrogenating the product from (a) by contacting with hydrogen at 550-825‹ F. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce a lubricating oil having a viscosity index of at least 90 and which is at least 20 greater than that of the feed. Suitable feeds are residuums of which at least 90 wt per cent boils above 1000‹ F. and which can have been deasphalted. Suitable catalysts for step (b) comprise an alumina support and either one or more oxides or sulphides of Sn, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co and Ni or Pt, Pd, Ru or Rh. Step (b) is suitably carried out at at least 50‹ F. below step (a). The product from step (b) is fractionated and the selected fractions can be dewaxed using a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and toluene or treated with U.V. light to improve their colour. Step (a) is carried out to open aromatic and naphthenic rings suitably using the catalytic metals as sulphides. H 2 S, NH 3 and light hydrocarbons can be removed from the effluent from step (a) before the hydrogenation step (b).
