Abstract

1400013 Lubricating oil; gasoline; hydrocracking BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 28 March 1973 [17 April 1972] 17565/72 Heading C5E Lubricating oil and gasoline are produced from a petroleum feedstock containing a major proportion of material boiling above 350‹ C. by first hydrocatalytically denitrogenating and desulphurizing the feed and then contacting the product, including the NH 3 and H 2 S produced, at 350-450‹ C. and 70-265 bars gauge in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst comprising a hydrogenating metal and an alkali metal-deficient zeolite of the faujasite type to produce a lubricating oil, boiling above 350‹ C. and having an improved viscosity index, and a gasoline boiling below 204‹ C. The feedstock suitably contains 0À02-0À30 wt. per cent nitrogen and 0À2-3 wt. per cent sulphur and can be a vacuum distillate boiling in the range 350-650‹ C. which can comprise 5-30 wt. per cent of a catalytic cracker cycle oil or it can be a deasphalted vacuum residue. The preliminary hydrocatalytic denitrogenation and desulphurization can be carried out using a catalyst such as Mo and Ni on silica-alumina. The faujasite catalyst suitably comprises zeolite X or Y with 20-80% of the theoretical alkali metal content replaced by alkaline earth metal, e.g. magnesium, or in part by alkaline earth metal and in part by hydrogen ions and contains 0À01-5 wt. per cent Pd or Pt which can be incorporated by ion exchange. The lubricating oil can be fractionated before or after the hydrocracking and can be dewaxed, e.g. with a methyl isobutyl ketone at - 18‹ C.
