Abstract

1276389 Making fibres by cutting IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Nov 1970 [19 Nov 1969] 56653/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] Fibres suitable for making non-woven fabrics are cut from a superposed plurality of film layers of a plastics material, at least one side of each layer being coated with a heat sensitive adhesive. The layers may be in a flat stack and be planed at their edges or (preferably) may comprise a film on a reel which is held in a lathe and rotated while cutter(s) is/are advanced towards it either radially or axially. The film may be uniaxially and/or biaxially oriented and/or be a laminate of which the plies have differing internal stresses whereby a crimped product can be obtained. In examples a reel of balanced biaxially drawn polypropylene coated with P.Vd.C. is cut using reel rotation speeds of 34-750 r.p.m. with peripheral cutting speeds of 60-1550 f.p.m. and cutting depths of 0À025-0À0025 inches.
