Abstract

1510115 Laminated films W R GRACE & CO 5 June 1975 [20 June 1974] 27514/74 Heading B5N A laminate film suitable for use as a backing board film in vacuum packaging comprises in order: (a) a substrate layer of unoriented, irradiated polyethylene, oriented polypropylene or oriented polyamide, (b) an oxygen barrier layer, e.g. the hydrolysis product of an ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer containing 20-95 mole per cent of vinyl acetate units at least 85% of which have been hydrolysed, a vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer or nitrile polymer and (c) an uppermost, heatsealable layer of a blend of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer with a wax, e.g. paraffin wax. The thicknesses of the layers may be respectively 10-100 microns, 3-30 microns and 3-15 microns. The vacuum package may comprise an article enclosed between the backing board film laminate and a thermoformed panel film which are heat-sealed together, either the backing board film laminate or the panel film having at its interface with the other and near the margin of the seal of deposit of resinous material, e.g. nitrocellulose, which is non- fused and which adheres to one of the films and not the other so that the films may be pulled apart by beginning the pull at the area of the deposit. The deposit which may contain a dye or pigment, may be circular or shaped in the form of an arrow or letter of the alphabet is applied from a liquid to the film, e.g. by printing. The theremoformable panel film may be a laminate comprising a substrate of unoriented polyolefin which may be irradiated or un-irradiated, ionomeric resin, polyester, plasticized vinyl chloride or polyamide, a barrier layer, which may be an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer, vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer or nitrile polymer and a heat-sealable layer, e.g. of polyethylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer. The films may be produced by extrusion. The layers of the laminates may be bonded together using an adhesive, e.g. a polyurethane.
