HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 10 Feb 1970 [13 March 1969] 6335/70 Heading A2C An apparatus for transferring cigarettes or other rod-like tobacco articles moving in the axial direction into a feed path in which they move transversely in two rows, comprises a transfer means for transferring the articles longitudinally in pairs into holders of a collecting drum, an article retarding means, and a position-adjusting means for the articles adapted to move at least one article of a transferred pair into a desired final position on the respective holder. As shown in Fig. 3, pairs of cigarettes 3a, 3b are accelerated by rotating discs 8, 9 into holders 14 of a rotating collecting drum 1. A stationary plate 15 seals the holders 14 axially in the transfer region A and a cover (18) seals them at least in the transfer region A and in the following positionadjusting region C. Suction applied to a slot 21 initially aids the transfer of a pair of cigarettes 3a, 3b into a holder 14, retards them as the leading cigarette 3a passes over the slot 21, and finally stops them as the cigarette 3a fully covers the whole length of the slot 21. Suction is then cut off from the slot 21 and simultaneously applied both to a pair of openings 32, 33, to hold the cigarette 3b in its arrested position, and to an opening 28 to draw the cigarette 3a further along the holder 14 to reposition it with its leading end just covering the opening 28 where it is arrested. Finally, suction is additionally applied to an opening 37 to more securely hold the cigarette 3a in its adjusted position until just before the pair of cigarettes 3a, 3b is transferred to a conveyer drum (42) when suction to all the openings is cut off. The suction is applied to the various openings in known manner by means of a stationary slotted control ring (27). In another embodiment, the slot 21 is replaced by a plurality of interconnected openings and the leading cigarette (103a) is held in its final position while the position of the trailing cigarette (103b) is adjusted. In a further embodiment, the position of both cigarettes (203a, 203b) is adjusted.
