Abstract

1275348 Pipe couplings HERMES-WERKE LEOPOLD HERRMANN 6 July 1970 [7 July 1969] 32711/70 Heading F2G [Also in Division H2] A socket for receiving a pipe end 1 includes a seal ring 4 made of an electrically insulating elastic material, a screw ring 3 which is separated from the seal ring 4 by a slip ring 5 and a split metal ring 6 which is of a less electropositive material than the slip ring 5. Such a pipe coupling is suitable for an underground pipe line carrying earth currents. The slip ring 5 is preferably made of zinc or magnesium and the metal ring 6 of iron or steel. The former acts as a sacrifice anode and the latter maintains an electrical connection with the pipe end 1. Hence an electrical contact is formed which prevents earth currents causing corrosion of the pipe end 1 by the formation of local cells.
