Abstract
1,272,787. Making heat exchange elements. BORG-WARNER CORP. 4 July, 1969 [29 July, 1968], No. 33956/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F4] A heat exchange element 25 formed from a sheet (26, Fig. 2) suitably deformed, folded and bonded to define radially disposed fluid passages 43 extending between entrance and exit chambers 41 and 42 is inserted into a tubular member 10 to which it is bonded so forming a heat exchanger. Fluid to be cooled, e.g. oil enters and leaves the exchanger through connections 17 and 21 provided in upstanding annular collars 11 and 12 on the tube 10. These collars form distribution and collection chambers for the fluid passing through the passages 43. Coolant fluid flows through the tubular member 10 which, in use, is positioned in a coolant line. The fluid to be cooled flowing through the passages 43 may be arranged to flow along a double pass path (Fig. 4, not shown), the inlet and outlet connections (55, 58) in this case being arranged at the same end of the tubular member (50). In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 6-8, not shown) the annular collars on the tube are omitted, the annular fluid distributing and collection chambers being constituted by circumferential grooves formed in the sheet comprising the heat exchange element.
