Abstract

1,269,267. Rolling mills. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. 8 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 23515/69. Heading B3M. A method of controlling the operation of a continuous metal strip rolling mill, in which the gauge of a strip being rolled is changed from one value to another during rolling, involves keeping the interstand tension constant during the change in gauge. The values of screwdown and roll speed for the various stands, corresponding to a change of gauge, are predetermined by a computer 75, and suitable signals are fed to the stands to control their peripheral roll speeds. The values may be provided in the form of a programme. One or more additional sets of measurements of strip gauge, interstand tension, and rolling load may be used with the above system. X-ray gauges 8 and 9 may be provided downstream of each stand, the outputs of the gauges modifying the screwdown or roll speeds of the stands. Similarly, load cells and tension meters 10-13 may be provided.
