Abstract
959,800. Rolling. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. April 10, 1961 [April 28, 1960], No. 12867/61. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G3] A method of rolling strip comprises passing a strip under tension between two pairs of rolls in sequence, measuring the thickness of the strip after the second pair of rolls at a plurality of positions transversely of the strip, and transversely varying the longitudinal tension of the strip in accordance with variations in the strip thickness. The tension of the strip S after passing rolls 2 is controlled by rollers 5 which rotate in the plane of the rollers, the thickness of the strip being measured by gauges 14, 16 and 18 arranged transversely of the strip. Signals from these gauges are fed into differential amplifiers 20, 22, the outputs of which control the direction of rotation of motors 34, 40 running from D.C. supplies at 32 and 36., Rollers 5 in a frame 48 are tilted by threaded spindles 345, 405 of the motors. If the strip is thicker at one edge than at the centre, a signal causes the rollers to be lifted at that edge to increase the tension and hence give a greater reduction to the edge in the rolls 4. A similar arrangement is described where the outputs of two bridges, including strain gauges mounted in the frame of rolls 4, are fed to the differential amplifiers.
