Abstract

1307823 Automatic control of rolling BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 27 Aug 1970 [3 Sept 1969] 43645/69 Heading G3R A rolling mill is automatically controlled to maintain a desired thickness and shape in strip or plate material. The shape is expressed in terms of two or more different geometric curves. As shown, the shape of rolled strip or plate is detected by a sensor 2 which, for example measures the forces applied to rollers at a number of points across the width of the material. From these measurements a computer 4 derives the constants of at least two geometric curves formed by the material and these constants are applied, together with thickness error signals derived from an X-ray gauge 1 or load cells under the adjusting screws of roll stand 3, to a controller 5. Controller 5 separately controls in accordance with each signal (a) the screw adjustment 6 of roll stand 3 (b) a hydraulic jack 7 bending rolls 3 and (c) a speed regulator 8 for the drive to pay-off reel 9 or take-up reel 10.
