Abstract

1,268,386. Easy-opening cans. AUSTRALIAN IRON & STEEL PTY., Ltd. 23 June, 1969 [24 June, 1968; 25 July, 1968], No. 31693/69. Heading B8D. A closure member 10 is secured to a metal can end 9 by a sealing ribbon 11 of non-metallic adhesive material, which extends around at least a major portion of only the periphery of the closure member and which is ruptured by displacement of the closure member to open the can. The closure member may be of tin-plate, steel, glass or plastics, such as polystyrene, an acrylic or methacrylic resin or an epoxy resin. The adhesive ribbon is preferably a natural or synthetic thermoplastics material, such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyvinyl dichloride. The closure member may be upwardly domed to protrude above the can end and may be circular or other shape. A rigid cover 14 is temporarily secured over the closure by adhesive, an adhesive tape or wax to prevent inadvertent opening and to maintain a hygienic closure. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the closure member is defined by an incision 16 extending therearound except for a bridging connection 17 about which the member hinges on depression thereof to break the seal and open the can. In a further modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), a pull tab is secured to the closure member to allow the member to hinge upwardly about an unincised portion 22. The portion 22 may be scored to facilitate complete separation of the closure member from the can end.
