Abstract
1,268,377. Cleaning metals etc.; electrolytically producing fluorine. J. E. LOVELOCK. June 16, 1969 [June 17, 1968], No.28811/68. Headings C7B and C7E. [Also in Division C1] Metals, semi-conductors, and glass are cleaned by gaseous fluorine or chlorine trifluoride in a chamber of e.g. copper, steel, iron, p.t.f.e. or fluoride glasses which is resistant to the fluorine and the escaping gas is passed through a trap containing activated carbon. The fluorine may be formed in situ e.g. by placing the article between concentric cylinders which are a porous nickel or carbon anode and a porous nickel cathode, the space between containing a potassium hydrogen fluoride electrolyte. The gas may be diluted with argon, nitrogen or air.
