Abstract

1,126,313. Electrolytic cells. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. March 28, 1967 [ March 28, 1966], No. 13991/67. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic cell comprising a component of inert material internally reinforced with an electrically conducting material and provided with alignment means for positioning a cathode in the cell, the alignment means includes a contact whereby electrical contact is made between the cathode and the reinforcing means so as to reduce or prevent corrosion of the reinforcing means. As described a cell bottom of concrete or synthetic plastic reinforced with metal e. g. steel has a contact plate engageable by a threaded alignment bolt carried by a lug secured to the body of a cathode unit which may be lowered on to the cell bottom with cathodes of mesh form surrounding upstanding graphite blade anodes supported by the cell bottom. The cell may be used for electrolyzing alkali metal chlorides or HCl and the cathodes may be separated from the anodes by porous diaphragms of asbestos, P.V.C., afterchlorinated P.V.C. or polypropylene. The top of the cell if metal reinforced may be similarly connected to the cathode unit. The cell bottom legs may also be connected to the cathode to prevent corrosion provided the legs are insulated from ground. As described the cell has three legs, one of which supports a reinforcing member extending across one side of the under face of the cell bottom.
