Abstract
1,264,384. Polymer compositions containing calcium sulphate. LION FAT & OIL CO. Ltd. 17 Feb., 1969 [19 Feb., 1968; 30 March, 1968; 25 June, 1968], No. 8516/69. Heading C3P. In preparing water-impermeable articles or materials from a thermoplastic synthetic resin and a filler, the filler consists of particles of average size not greater than 60 microns composed solely of gypsum, calcium sulphate, hemihydrate or anhydrous calcium sulphate, and an intimate mixture of the synthetic resin and the filler, in which the filler constitutes 30 to 90% by weight of the mixture, is subjected to a moulding operation. The mixture may include a small proportion, between 1 and 5% by weight, of a viscosity improver defined as synthetic rubber (ethylene-propylene copolymer, styrenepropylene copolymer or styrene-butadiene copolymer), natural rubber or a natural resin (rosin). The articles or materials may be formed by calendering, injection moulding or blow moulding. Examples disclose moulding compositions comprising polyethylene, ethylenepropylene rubber (viscosity improver) and filler, or polyvinyl chloride, dibutyl phthalate, zinc stearate, styrene-butadiene rubber and resin (viscosity improvers) and filler. The filler may be by-product gypsum from the phosphoric acid (phosphate) industry, gypsum burnt within an electric furnace and thereafter pulverized, gypsum treated for 60 minutes with 60% H 2 SO 4 at 100‹ C. and thereafter air-dried, bleached gypsum, anhydrous gypsum, or the calcium sulphate obtained by pulverizing the product produced by causing the hemi-hydrate to absorb water.
