Coke ovens.-Each heating-wall is divided by a vertical partition into two symmetrical sets of flues, each of which comprises a vertical flue 1 or 1<1> at the middle of the oven and horizontal flues 2, 3, 4 or 2<1>, 3<1>, 4<1> connected in series. The regenerator 8 is connected by a sole flue 5 with the lowermost flue 4 of the right-hand series, and by a passage 9<1> with the vertical flue 1<1> of the lefthand series. Similarly, the regenerator 8' is connected with the flues 4' and 1. In operation, assuming that air is supplied through the regenerator 8, gas is supplied to the right-hand flues through the burner 11, and to the left-hand flues through the burners 10<1>, 12<1>, the products of combustion passing through the two sets of flues in opposite directions. On reversal, gas is supplied to the right-hand flues through the burners 10, 12 and to the left-hand flues through the burner 11'. Combustion is controlled by dampers 14, 14<1> and 15, 15<1> in the flues 4, 4', and 5, 5<1> respectively.
