Abstract

1,254,777. Rotary and reciprocating pumps and motors. E. L. FARRIS. May 22, 1969, No. 26225/69. Headings F1A and F1F. A rotary pump or motor of the sliding vane type comprises, a two-part casing 14a, 14b, Fig. 2, having a circumferential channel 20 of substantially semi-circular cross-section and a rotor 16 secured to a shaft 44 for rotation about an axis 18, Fig. 3, eccentric with respect to the casing axis. The rotor 16 which comprises a discshaped body 38 projecting radially into the channel diameter as the channel 20 in each of which is mounted a ball vane 28. The balls project through radial slots 50 into the channel so that they are caged. Operating as a pump, on clockwise rotation of the rotor, liquid is sucked into chambers 30 through a port 32 and discharged through a port 34. In rotating over the zone AC the working chambers remain at constant minimum volume and no pumping occurs. The bottoms of the bores 26 are inter-connected via passages 52 so that inward movement of the balls displaces the liquid into those bores in which the balls are moving outwardly to urge them sealingly into the channel. In a modified construction, the rotor is concentrically mounted with respect to the casing which now includes two inlets and two outlets. The two inlets may be inter-connected as also the two outlets to provide two pumps (or motors) operating in parallel. In another construction, passages 52b, Fig. 5 (not shown) in the rotor connect the bottom of the rotor bores with chambers 30b so that reciprocation of the balls 28b in the bores produces a secondary pumping action.
