A hair treatment machine 10 comprises a plurality of treatment units 43 and a lining 40 extending between the units each treatment unit including a treatment element 54 reciprocated by a piston and cylinder assembly 45, 44 into and out of head receiving zone 41. The treatment units may each include an extension 48 to receive a treatment element, which may comprise resilient flexible fingers 58 annularly arranged on a base 55, the fingers shaped to move outwardly on the head as the element is advanced. Preferably the treatment elements of alternate units are arranged to move into the head receiving zone while the remaining elements move out, the respective cylinders being connected to opposite sides of pistons 62 in double action pumps 60, 61 to give the effect at the treatment units of alternate pressure and suction. The treatment units 43 may be mounted resiliently by grommets 51 in a rigid lining 40 or in a resilient lining. Perforated tubes 90 or sprays (29 Fig. 1 not shown) may be provided to inject hair treatment liquid (e.g. water, water and shampoo oil or dye) into the hair from a supply system (Fig. 4 not shown) and treatment unit extensions 48 may have apertures 52 to let out liquids from the head receiving zone. Valves 75, 76, 77 open the pipes 71, 72 to the atmosphere, valve 75 being opened at the end of a treatment cycle by means of cam 79. Valves 76 are pressure relief valves with an adjuster 81, and the valves 77 are vacuum relief valves. Operation of the machine (Fig. 4) may be controlled by valves and microswitches operated by cams driven by motor 64.
