Abstract
1,251,377. Hot melt compositions. BITUMEN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 April, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17743/68. Headings C3B and C3R. A storage stable, hot melt composition, having a ring and ball softening point >320‹ F. comprises: (I) an epoxidized material, e.g. epoxidized soya bean oil; (II) a polyamide which comprises at least 15% by weight of the composition; and (III) finely divided filler present at >67% by wt. of the composition. I and II are selected so that substantially no reaction takes place between them under ambient conditions. II may comprise three separate polyamides. The first may be a thermoplastic substantially linear product of chemically equivalent proportions of dimerized linoleic acid and ethylenediamine, having M.W. 3000- 9000, softening point 356-374‹ F., specific gravity 0.98 and an amine value of 4. The second may have a higher M.W. than the first and comprise a substantially linear thermoplastic condensate of dimerized linoleic acid, ethylenediamine, propylenediamine and/or polyalkylamines having an amine value of 4-8 and softening point about 284‹ F. The third may be a hard brittle polyamide, amine value 3, softening point 356 - 374‹ F. and being capable of transition from a solid to a low viscosity liquid over a short temp. range. The wt. ratio of the first polyamide to the second + third may be 1 : 18 and the wt. ratio of the second to the third 1 : 1 to 4 : 1. III may comprise Zn dust, stearate coated CaCo 3 , magnesium aluminium silicate and Sb 2 O 3 . The composition may be used in the form of a rod.
