Abstract

1,247,410. Heat transfer. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 20 May, 1969 [25 May, 1968], No. 25644/69. Heading F4U. [Also in Division C7] A refractory metal or alloy thereof is deoxidized in the solid state by connecting a shaped part or article thereof to a sealed heat transfer tube, which may be a Perkins tube or a heat pipe to form a heat-conducting path between the article and the inside of the tube, a part of the tube, remote from the point of attachment of the article, is heated so that the metallic working fluid deoxidizes the article which is then detached from the tube. The article may be connected to the outside of the tube, when there must be an oxygen diffusion path between it and the interior of the tube and the ambient atmosphere must be oxygen-free, or to the inside thereof. The shaped part may be a portion of the tube which can be detached after treatment. The part to be treated may be of Nb, Zr, Hf, Ta, Mo, W or of a refractory alloy of one or more of these; the working fluid may be Li or Cs and the preferred operating temperature is 450‹ to 2200‹ C. After treatment the article may be subjected to a skin-removing pickling treatment.
