Abstract
1,254,830. Casting processes. TRW Inc. 1. April, 1970, No. 15455/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A method of casting titanium or its alloys comprises suspending a slug 21 of the metal spaced from the walls of a refractory crucible 11, inductively heating the slug while so suspended until it melts, collecting the molten metal on a disc 20 of titanium or an alloy thereof, continuing the application of heat to the molten metal until it melts through the disc 20, and directing the molten metal to a mould 25. The process may be carried out in a vacuum or an inert atmosphere. A thermocouple 23 measures the temperature of the slug, the power to the induction coil 17 being increased when the slug has been uniformly heated to a temperature just below its melting point. The crucible 11 is preferably made of graphite and the disc 20 preferably has the same composition as the metal to be melted.
