In a machine tool, e.g. a screw cutting lathe having linear guideways 5, 6 for a sliding carriage 4, groups of telescopically-coupled protective plates 7 adjacent the guideways are coupled to the carriage 4 at both sides thereof and slidably engage cover strips 17, 18 which extend over the guideways and pass through apertures 15, 16 in the carriage 4; the carriage 4 has passages 8 ... 14 for forced lubrication of the guide surfaces, and the end protective plate 7b of each group is normally coupled to the machine frame by a spring-loaded latch 25 which engages a stop 23 in the cover strip 17 (or 18) but which can be disconnected therefrom by a stop 24 attached to the carriage 4 so that when the carriage approaches its extreme end positions the telescopically closed group of protective plates 7 is coupled to the carriage 4 and carried beyond the end of the bed thereby. On reverse movement the latch 25 again engages the stop 23 and is disconnected from the carriage 4.
