Abstract
1,241,540. Electromagnetic reed contact device. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 May, 1970 [9 May, 1969], No. 21878/70. Heading H1N. A reed contact device or unit has a polarizing magnet on one or both reeds adjacent the contact area and the magnet is polarized in a direction normal to the length of the reeds. As shown a sealed magnetic reed relay has a coil 11 surrounding the sealed envelope 3 containing two reeds 5, 7 with a permanent magnet 9 on the reed 5 arranged so that on coil energization to produce a flux in direction P, the additive fluxes in the gap 13 bring the reed ends into engagement. The magnet is strong enough to maintain the contacts closed. On coil energization to produce a flux in the direction Q the flux in the contact area is weakened to permit contact separation. The magnet 9 is such that in the event of excessive flux in direction Q the reed area 15 saturates to prevent reattraction of the reeds. The magnet may bias the contacts closed when the coil is not energized. Magnets may be mounted on both reeds (Fig. 2, not shown). The contacts may be operated by a movable magnet.
